The Viper ACR-X Drops Jaws at Sebring |

Last weekend marked the annual Winterfest at Sebring Raceway and with it, the first public racing appearance of the 2010 Viper SRT10 ACR-X. Not content to sit on the sidelines getting drooled over, the race-ready Viper saw action during several of the event’s Enduro races. Driver Kuno Wittmer had the ACR-X’s rotors glowing on several night sessions, setting some of the fastest Viper laps of the weekend (around 2:09) in what was simply deemed a “test and tune” weekend for the team.
The event, which saw an impressive 380-car attendance — including 37 registered Vipers — saw all eyes affixed on the X-car. Besides earning its stripes during Sebring’s exhibition races, the Viper was on hand all weekend for race fans (and drivers) to gawk at, and Tom Francis of Viper Racing was on hand to take down ACR-X orders and dole out IOU’s. In the wake of Sebring, team Viper have started gearing up for the ACR-X-only Dodge Viper Cup, set to launch this July.

I’m a racing fan, but like most racing fans, a Nascar fan mostly. I don’t understand the point of the Viper Cup racing. If you’re not going to be racing against the competing manufacturers, then what do you prove by winning? I want to see Vipers competing against Porsche, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, and of course CORVETTE!

Ever hear of Porsche Cup? Ferrari Challenge? Mazda Miata? Heck even SCCA T1 class should be renamed the Corvette Class since all the Vette owners lobbied for rules changes because the Viper was handing their butts to them. What fun is it to pull for a particular make when the rules require your brand to install restrictor plates and weight so the competition can keep up? Nope, the time is right for spec series racing. You should appreciate it, after all that’s all NASCAR is anymore.

Yep, I’ve heard of them but don’t watch them for the same reason that I wouldn’t watch Viper Cup. I like to see manufacturers go against each other! As far as Nascar being a spec series, I don’t care. As long as there are race cars out there representing Dodge Chargers and they’re racing against race cars representing brand X’s, that’s good enough for me. I understand the reasoning behind such tight rules governing the cars which make them pretty much “spec” cars; CLOSER racing! Now, I would definitely watch Vipers against Corvettes, even if the rules were such that they were pretty much “spec” cars! And before you ask, yes, I’ve watched Vipers racing on road coarses many times. I’m a fan of Tommy Archer.

Ugh… if there were one thing in this world I could get rid of with out thinking twice about it, it would be Nascar.
