The final day of exclusive press access to the 2010 New York International Auto Show drew to a close this afternoon and tomorrow, the doors at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center will be flung open to the public. If you aren’t one of those lucky few who are able to attend this year, there’s no need to despair. We utilized our behind-the-scenes passes for more than just free breakfast this year and spent the last two days snapping high-res images of every piece of machinery bearing the Dodge logo.

I always enjoy lookiing at different Challenger schemes. I always been a Mopar fan since my 74 Charger (my first car). Never understood the 4 door charger, but that I guess is another story. I don’t really know the specs and the professional critics of the auto indistry. All I know is the Chjallenger is a damn good lookin’ car! Tired of the damn ford guys with there Mustangs and the Chevy guys with there vettes (and now with there Cameros). I would take a Challenger SRT over any of these any time!!!!!!!!!!!

The 4 door Charger was built because 4 doors sell better than 2..I think the Charger is a great car,and the Challenger is even better if you dont need to transport people around !! I do hope the Challenger sales pick up so the car will be around along time,its getting hammered by the Camaro and Mustang in sales ..

Sorry man, but that is a really old argument. I don’t know about since, but the first year of the retro themed mustang sold over 164,000 units.
On top of that, even in 1969, they sold over 96,000 chargers, and not a one was a 4-door.
I’ve heard that the new camaros are flying off the lots, and have seen way more of them in my town than “chargers” (though I must admit, I’m really not looking for 4 door sedans wearing that name, and don’t notice them as much)
The red camaro with the white stripes on the hood I saw today looked pretty good.
I read that the reason that sedan wears the charger name is because they needed a name to put on a car that they had in the works (some deal with australia that went arye), and every public poll they did for name recognition had the name charger as the one most recognised as a dodge brand vehicle. (gosh, I wonder why, dukes of hazzard, bullit, blade etc etc etc)

It’s proven in the modern Dodge world, 4 doors sell better than 2,with your theory the new Dodge Challenger should outsell the new Charger,but it does not..I wish it did,because the Challenger production will probably be stopped,it hardly sells compared to the Mustang and Camaro..and the Challenger is a better car !!
Also more 4 doors are sold and produced than 2 door cars from any manufacturer..So in essence I am right..I never said 4 doors look better than 2 doors,I own a couple mid 60′s 440 Chrysler 300′s and they are 2 doors and my 440 Challenger is a 2 door along with my 68 440 Charger,and my recently sold 69 440 Charger !!
Dont know where you read about the aussie Charger name/deal ? Alot of stuff is b.s..
Charger wears the name because its the first affordable Dodge car in years to be rear drive and Hemi power…(came out late 05,challenger came out 08)..it has more in common with the original rwd V-8 than the 1982-87 Charger that was a 2 door but 4 cyl and fwd !! I will take a new 2010 rwd 6.1 Hemi 4 door over the 80′s Charger..though I did own a 86 Shelby Charger Turbo in the early 90′s,as I then started and now continue to buy sell Mopars all the time..
You cannot compare 1969 to 2010,I even think Chrysler sold more vehicles then than now…hope they turn things around for the better..

Hemihead, I could care less what you think about me. I could care less about someone who likes the current car and write’s an article about thinks.
The fact is, you can’t change history/reality by typing online.
I could point to several articels online that support my opinion too, but you don’t care, you like the car. Talking someone like you is like talking to a religious person, I’ll alwasy be wrong, even if I can prove without a doubt whatever I am saying.
From an article that was online in 2006:
“Creed says the vehicle didn’t have a name at first and was referred to as the Carlsbad theme. The team then began running through various names used by Dodge in the past. We chose the name Charger, he says. We researched the name, and it received very good ratings. It came out the best, and we decided to go with the name.
Creed balks at the suggestion that had the design team known from the get-go the vehicle would carry the Charger moniker, the styling might have been more retrospective. We elected deliberately not to do a reproduction of the ’69 Charger, he says. He told the designers, I want a car worthy of the Charger name, but I don’t want you to take anything off the shelf from any of the ’65 to ’69, or ’70 or ’71 Chargers.”

For what it is worth, yes I think we can all agree that the 68-70 and even the 71-74 Chargers were the best Chargers ever built. However, the times have changed and people prefer 4 doors for practicality and use. Whatever the case, I think they would see a lot more Challengers on the road if they built the seatbelt in the seat so the rear passengers could climb in the back a lot easier. What were they thinking? In addition, the electric seat is too slow on the drivers side so you can’t let people in and out on that side. They need a quick release mechanism of some sort. What were they thinking? At any rate, I don’t care that much because I purchased it for the looks, however, most of us who want one just for the looks, horsepower, etc. have purchased one already so now we have to look forward to the remaining people who are teetering on the edge on whether to buy one or buy something else. Lets keep improving this car so we can see more on the road. Getting back to the Charger, when you see a decked out SRT8 on the road with the hood scoop, spoiler, wheels, etc. you have to admit that it is the best looking 4 door on the road. Now if it had the sleek rear end taillights of the 69-70 Charger (unlike the plastic ones that come up thru the rear quarter panels currently) and the indentations on the doors and maybe the hood or at least an air grabber hood. Somehow integrate the door handles on the rear doors where they are on the top so you don’t see them like on the Jeep Compass. Forget the aerodynamics, just make a car that looks good. The roofline on the 68-70 Charger with the puffed out wheel wells, coke bottle design will never be beat, however, Dodge could do a remake like they did with the Challenger and try again. I think a two door version would sell, especially if the front seat easily folded forward with no safety belts in the way. Aesthetics and use can be combined without that much trouble. It was done in the past and it can be accomplished today.

In fact, I agree with 90 eprcent of 440s first post on this thread.
In the very first post, John Ryan wrote among other things “Never understood the 4 door charger”
I tried to explain how it came to be, hemihead jumped on me with his childish repsonses.
Name calling, telling me to “get over it, etc etc does not change history or reality. There is nothing to get over. My first post was nto opinion, it was factual.
Perhaps some here should re-read it.
Not once did I say anything negative about your precious sedan, though I easily could have.

moparman, I think we all agree that the president day Charger is NOT worthy of the name, however, the marketing people took over and there we have it. I think bringing back the name where it didn’t belong stirred up ill will in the loyal Mopar community and hopefully Dodge learned by this. No one will help them on their next bankruptcy. It is always difficult to discuss vehicles on the web, especially if someone currently owns one. In most cases they don’t own them by choice, instead they had no choice because there was no viable alternative to buy at the time. After a while you become attached to the vehicle and you protect it like it was a child of yours. I think we all have done it in the past, I know I have. Bottom line, 99 out of 100 people will tell you that a 1968-1970 Charger is an awesome car so why can’t we create something like that again? The answer is that we can, however, no one has the courage to do it.

The Charger name worked great for the ’06,brought alot of attention to the car,since the 300 was stealing all of the awards..the Charger name stands out,thats why they even used it in the 80′s..who knows maybe a 2 door Charger is in the works one day !! They could of called it an Intrepid,but they wanted to grab headlines and the Charger name itself is a awesome name..I have no problems with them using their own name..
The original Charger was not originally called a musclecar..back then they called them Supercars !!!
I think a new 2 door Mopar is at the bottom of Chrysler’s list..It is too bad the Challenger cant sell alot of cars..It’s the hottest Dodge in decades !! So with the low Challenger sales,a 2 door Charger aint going to happen anty time soon..I hope they at least keep the Challenger around even at its current low sales rate.
I dont have an issue with the name Charger on a 4 door,a bad ass name for a bad ass car !!
But,I do have a problem with the name Magnum,on a wagon or future suv !! That also was a 2 door car in 78-79 based on a b-Body Charger,flip the car upside down and its a 71 Charger !! I owned a few of those old Magnum’s,my Dad still has one,great handling,driving cars,14 second 1/4 when you remove the factory lean burn computer with a Mopar e.c.u and a better carb,even with the low compression engine and 3.21 gears they move pretty good !!
Actually,they could of called the new Charger a Challenger for all I care,as long as Mopar stays in business and builds r.w.d hemi cars ,its all good !!!

The reason the Challenger doesn’t sell well is the price it too high. An SRT with a few options runs $43K. A Camaro with the big 6.2L motor and 6 speed is $37K. Also, you can’t find an SE model at any dealer. Most Camaros I’ve seen on the road are RS’s. Not everyone can afford the R/T or SRT. The SE needs to start under $20K to make a dent in sales.

Hey Plum, I agree the Challenger is a bitchin car but Dodge does need to lower the cost to get more sales. When an SRT8 in close in cost to a base Corvette Hmmmm. Are you looking for an SE? and if so what color. I helped a guy on here find the car he wanted maybe I could help out. Would also need what state you live in. Tracy, you are dead on with your Corvette comment. I just sold my 2006 Charger SRT8 and bought a brand new 2009 Corvette coupe for $41.5k + TTL. I seriously shopped for a Challenger SRT8 because I love the looks of the car but the friggin’ dealers acted like they were selling some exotic European supercar. No one would deal on a Plum Crazy SRT8 so I said screw you Dodge and went and got the Vette. I was not about to pay almost sticker price just because of a color. The Challenger looks cool, I agree, but in terms of performance, it ain’t a Corvette and you can’t price it like one! Sorry Dodge, I hope you survive through 2011 but your pricing and your dealer network will bury you yet.

Hi FormerSRTowner, yes it is a shame that the pricing is so hi, maybe thats why their the 3 in the big three. Ford and GM seem to keep their costs close so a person can pick the car they can pay for and still like it VS buying somrthing that they can afford but don’t really like. I’m not brand loyal I’ll buy from whom ever as long as it’s a good car/truck and yes price has and looks play a big part in it. It makes me laugh when you can buy a Shelby for something like $80K and yes they have improved it but it still is a Mustang. Same with the SMS Challengers I could no way buy one, I’m sure it is highly improved but come on $75-85k no thanks I’ll take a Grand Sport Corvette and spend less and have more. I dig the Challenger and want an R/T in Furios Fuchsia, but the truth is Dodge needs to lower their costs and work on their PR at their dealers, I read the same thing here alot about bad dealers and salesmen all the time. Hell I even helped a guy find a car he wanted and I did it just because, didn’t make a dime and didn’t care. Dodge doesn’t appear to want to help THEIR CUSTOMERS and that sucks. Anyway someday they’ll wake up and listen to their customers or they will FAIL again.

Funny thing…the last few days I took a road trip and I have seen quite a few Challenger’s…after kind of complaining they dont sell any or enough of, because they are pricey..guess thats how it works,complain you dont see them and Dodge doesnt sell enough ,and guess what …I see them all over now..Hope the sales numbers are way up !!
I guess the new Challenger is like the original 1970′s Challenger it was priced alot higher than the Mustang and Camaro….Dodge,Just keep it in production..
SUBLIME,Now I am getting jealous..I think I may sell one of my old rides for a new Challenger !! Hey 440, I took my Plum Crazy Challenger out today and was thinking how I had to settle for that color because Dodge will never give us a timeline for Sublime greeen, and as I am coming up to the car to get in at the parking lot, two people ask me to get out of the way because they are trying to take pictures of the car. The color is growing on me and when you are driving it and the sun hits the side mirrors it is kind of cool to see the sparkling purple. When you are looking down on the hood from the front end and you just see the bumper, I swear it looks like a 1970 HEMI ‘cuda with an elastomeric bumper. I think the Classic looks cooler than the SRT8 because it just says HEMI on the hood like the old cars did (don’t get mad SRT owners the bigger tires, stripe on the hood, and orange motor looks tuff as well). The liter stuff just doesn’t cut it (my opinion). When they come out with a 426 or 440 cubic inch monster again they need to write it in cubic inches and not in liters. In the US, we purchase soda in liters and thats about it. If you can wait 440, next year’s model should be great with the minor makeover. A 6.4liter -500hp monster with MDS is definitely worth the wait. You may have to buy stock in Good Year because with that much horsepower, you are going to go through tires. At any rate, almost everywhere I go people stop and stare at the car. Everyone wants to be your friend, even the Camaro and Mustang guys. Everyone needs to purchase a Challenger sometime in their life or your life will never be complete.

I looked around yesterday a dealer had a Purple R/T and a purple SRT ,I am really starting to like that color as well,it was clear and sunny and it looks as good as you say it does..I agree with you the R/T classic looks great !! Love the chrome wheels,stripe,ect.. I just want to see the specs on the new 6.4 before I purchase one..Who knows it will be my daily driver most of the time so,a R/T would probably be powerful enough for me..I too wish they said the motor size in cubic inches instead of litre’s..I think the 6.4 would be a 392 c.i…besides that a great looking car !!

Tracy, I’m sure they don’t as well. That’s the point. Some people do not have $30K+ for an R/T just to get the color they want. You can sell a lot of cheaper cars if they look hot and Plum Crazy is hottttt!

Hi Matt, yes the Plum Crazy is a bitchin color, I do agree that ALL Challengers should be made to order with all colors that they are going to use. This is a flaw that Dodge has and should make a change for the SE models. If they have too make a small run of them say 500 and they would sell out in no time. Or buy a black one and have it painted in Plum Crazy, I do not know what that would cost but if it’s under 28K that might be an opption. Paint may only be $2000.00-$3000.00 if car is $23,000.00-$25,000.00 you get what you want for a price that meets your buget. Tracy

Hello 440, took a look at what you wrote about the R/T vs the SRT and if it was me I would go ahead and get the R/T. This car is going toa daily driver so get the most for your buck at the pump. Plus it’s going to kick the crap out of 99% of what it meets and still give you GREAT gas milage. With the money saved by getting an R/T you could buy more options and really have a well equipt Challenger. Something to ponder. Hope you don’t mind the input but getting more is always best in my book. Good luck Tracy

Hello Guys, I can’t seem to find the post but someone was asking about liters to cubic inches and it goes like this, 5.7=347 CI 6.1=372CI 6.4= 390CI and 7.0= 427CI. I hope this helps. Tracy

Tracy….a engine done in litres can have a few different cubic inch displacements…a new Mopar 5.7 L is a 345 c.i
A GM 5.7L is a 350 c.i.
A Ford 5.8 is a 351 c.i.,
and old Mopar 426 c.i Hemi is 7.0 L,
A Mopar 440 is 7.2 L,
The Mopar 6.1 Hemi is 370 c.i,
the mopar 6.4 Hemi is 392 c.i !!!
There is a formula to use, formula is pi x (bore/2) squared x stroke , you have to know your engines specs then enter your specs do the math then times it by the number of cylinders..

440, I hope to God when they release the 6.4 liter motor they call it the 392 HEMI. They brought back the retro Challenger so why can’t they bring back the retro cubic inches designation and the retro 392 HEMI. Men want big numbers and we are not a metric country. Do the right thing Dodge, cubic inches stickers or chrome plated plastic emblems would be really sharp and sell some cars. It is a muscle car for God sakes so use the correct terminology.

It just doesn’t sound right to say it’s 7.0 hemi or back in the day thats sure is a nice SS 7.4 but to say it’s a 426 Hemi or a SS 454 or SS396 now that sounds like a Muscle car. You fellas need to listen. I have tried to buy a Challenger but they are priced to high. I have compared the LS CamaroRS/Challenger SE and Chevy (I hate saying this) is prevailing. C’mon what are you guys doing? I would love to have a new Challenger R/T with the appearance package but I just can’t afford to buy one, and with the economy it doesn’t help either. (In Dodges defense) but like many I am not on this boat alone.
I vow to own a Challenger even if I have to buy a salvage car and put it back together but until then….I can just whish and wait.
How about a convertible? Is that ever gonna happen? I retire in 4 years from the military and I would love to have this car in a drop top. =)

I believe your right brother. I have been a Dodge/Chrysler guy most of my life and I find it very hard to stay to a brand that won’t speak to it’s customers. I have read some of the other post and its true that many of the dealerships out there gouge the customer and as stated before will hurt the company.
They have the chance to really turn things around but they are still playing the same old game that got them introuble the first time. They should really be concerned with customer care and what John Q. Public wants.

Hi Sarge, yes the silence is deafing, I’m wondering if they’ll want to know what I know about where I used to work and how they DON’T BUY DODGES even though they are supposed to by law. I’m talking 10-20 trucks at a time from Chevy and Ford combined along with all the other vans this is alot of money. This is an every year kind of deal as the old vehicles get old they buy new ones to replace them. If this is left unanswered will know they don’t care and they are going to do it their way and we don’t matter. Tracy

Its official Chevy will have the Camaro in a vert and they will also offer it in a 6 and 8 configuration. You fellas need to step to the plate!!! I want a Challenger and It needs to be a vert…but if you can’t do it (and I am not paying for aftermarket conversion) Then I guess a Chevy will be in the driveway!!! Vert with 5spd !!! RS pkg as well!!!

Nice. Very nice! To bad I have never seen an actual Chally up close at the dealer. All they seem to have are Black and Gun metal grey colors. If you want to order a specific color, you have to spend another 15-20 Grand on a RT or SRT. Somehow, Dodge thinks a color option is a 10k luxury. You can get any color option with the new Camaro and Mustang. Hello Dodge1You might expend on your car market share if you actually gave the customers what they want.
