HEMI-powered Dodge Charger 500 mixes it up in vintage NASCAR action
If there’s one thing we love as much as modern racing, it’s kicking back and watching vintage footage of our favorite childhood cars going at each other around the nation’s tri-ovals. There’s just nothing like seeing heroes like Buddy Baker, Bobby Allison and Bobby Isaac piloting their old-school Dodge Chargers to the front of the pack. The good news: We got our hands on a stack of film from way back in 1969 detailing the triumphs and trials of the wicked Charger 500, and being the givers that we are, we’ve uploaded the whole kit and caboodle to YouTube.
Complete with rocking guitar riffs and a surly voiceover, this is pre-‘70s film making at its best. Watching the quick glimpses into the Dodge racing program back then, it’s amazing to see just how far the sport has evolved from its humble beginnings. Still, we’d give our right arm for one of those minty-fresh 426 ci Hemi V8s.
You know, if history class had been nearly as interesting as the video of those classic Chargers going the distance, we might have paid a little more attention in school. Check out part one here, and keep your eyes open for the next half to hit the web soon.

Thanks for the video. One of my favorites was Bobby Isaac in the 71 K&K Insurance Charger Daytona. Series Champion in 1970 with the high wing car. The car was so fast and slippery, Nascar outlawed the big engine.

I HAVE LOVED THESE CARS FOR MANY,MANY YEARS.I LIVE IN THE UK,SO YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHEN I FIRST WENT ROUND THE DAYONA TRACK,AND STOOD AT THE TOP OF THE BANK AND SAW ALL THE CARS THAT HAD LEFT THEIR PAINT,ALONG THE WALL. I CLOSED MY EYES AND I WISHED I COULD HAVE BEEN TRANSPORTED BACK TO THE EARLY 70′S!!!

Loved it! But you’ve GOT to dig up another one showcasing the man that did more for Dodge/Plymouth than anyone in the history of racing, the “King” of Nascar racing, Richard Petty. It was a joy to watch Buddy Baker, Bobby Allison, Bobby Isaac, Cotton Owens, etc., but if you added up all of their wins together, it wouldn’t equal Richard Petty’s! And the only driver/owner that has ever been as loyal (as possible) to Mopars as Richard Petty is, maybe, Cotton Owens. It’s just a shame that Dodge has abandoned Richard Petty! That err in judgement on Dodge Motorsports’ part has cost Dodge more fans than any decision they’ve ever made!

Good stuff…keep these vintage racing clips coming. Maybe Petty could make King Cuda’s for mopar. Convert Challengers into ‘cuda’s, paint them Petty blue with a shaker hood and a 426 HEMI. Autograph them with a serialized dash plaque and sell them at the dealers. Mopar needs to sponsor him in truck racing or the Nationwide series. They owe the King something. I know the fans will purchase merchandise and attend races, buy cars, etc. It is just down right good public relations.

It’s a stupid A** move to let the King, Richard Petty walk. He is the heritage of Dodge/Plymouth
racing. It’s all got to do with loyalty here Dodge! And everybody has heard of Richard Petty. Even non Nascar, everyday, public Joe’s know him. You don’t let somebody like that go. It says a lot
about how you treat people, what you find valuable, and who’s running the show over at HQ.
Penske may be well known for his rental trucks, multiple various branded car dealerships, or his
company’s involvement in various motorsport events, but he could never be the humble, down to earth, fan appreciating, stock car driver Richard Petty has been. And if given a better deal, Penske will switch so fast to another manufacturer it’ll make your head spin. Every body needs a
Hero fella’s, especially the average Joe on the street! One that he thinks just maybe he can relate to, and “The King” is it!

AMEN and AMEN, Sublime and HEMIhead, AMEN! My sentiments exactly. Richard Petty is the reason I became a Mopar guy back in the ’60s! He WANTS to be a Mopar guy, always has. He is still dabbling with Mopars by building special Challengers in his old race shop at Level Cross. The King is the closest thing to a legend and a hero that us Mopar fans have and how has Dodge Motorsports rewarded him?!?!? By pulling support from his Nascar teams!! If Dodge doesn’t get the King back when his contract is up with Ford, it should be a MAJOR crime, punishable by firing and loss of pension by whomever is responsible at Dodge! Richard Petty COULD be OUR loyal Dodge guy; like Roush is to Ford and Richard Childress is to Chevy. But we have nobody. Roger Penske? The guy would jump ship in a heart beat! He’s already jumped onto the Chevy wagon for 2013 with his Indy teams and rumors continue to pop up about him talking to Toyota and VW for their next Nascar manufacturer contract. Remember Dodge; you reap what you sow! If you don’t show some loyalty to someone, like the King, then nobody is ever going to show loyalty to you!
