Vincent Nobile, who isn’t old enough to legally drink, won his first NHRA national event this weekend at the O’Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston.

This 19 year-old from Melville, New York wheeled his 500 cubic-inch HEMI-powered past some heavy hitters in the class and became the youngest driver ever to win in NHRA Pro Stock. After qualifying fifth, Vincent was paired up with previous two-time event champion Kurt Johnson in round one and proceeded to take the win with a 6.643 to Johnson’s losing 6.667 ET. In round two, Vincent had to go up against the 2006 NHRA Pro Stock Champion Jason Line. After both cars lit the staged lights, Jason let the clutch out too early and red-lighted but Vincent’s impressive 6.63 easily would have handled the 6.64 run of Line. In the semi-finals, Vincent had his dialed-in like a bracket racer as he laid down another 6.63 to defeat Stanfield’s Pontiac GXP. This set the stage for the finals as Vincent was “in the zone” and had a killer reaction time (0.007) to Roger Brogdon’s not to shabby 0.009 light. It was a great side-by-side drag race but Vincent’s Dodge nipped Brogdon’s Pontiac right at the stripe by approximately six inches!

Vincent Nobile is definitely having a break-out year, and after this weekend’s win at the Spring Nationals, he’s definitely in contention for the coveted NHRA Rookie of the Year award.
