Having 370 horsepower is fun, but when the weather turns on you it may lose its luster. Spinning tires and fishtailing down the avenue is cute but only to a point. As we slowly transition from winter to spring and eventually summer, the 2011 Charger R/T Max AWD may be the ticket for those who have to deal with the extremes of what Mother Nature throws at you. Our friends at Automobile Magazine recently had chance to go for a spin in the Charger R/T AWD and we’re quite pleased with the overall handling and performance along with the award winning interior. They dug the sounds of the 5.7L HEMI® while tuning in to our “infotainment” system.

What’s the torque split for the AWD system?
Is it RWD biased?
Are any components mechanical (such as limited slip, clutch packs, etc…) or is everything controlled through ABS?

I noticed on Allpar.com that the new 2011 Dodge Charger police car lost again to Ford and Chevy when they were tested in L.A. What have you guys done? I know Chevy is cheating by bringing up their Australian version of a Caprice and Ford has a turbo on their Taurus, however, you need to have a plan B if no one is going to play fair. There are a lot of police cars in this country and Dodge is missing out on a lot of sales. When I was growing up, most of the police cars used to be Dodge and Plymouths. Come on, you can do better than this. Put a turbo on the V6 or a supercharger on the HEMI. You can then sell them to the public as well as real R/T versions.

Yes, I’ve read about that also RLD. But I think the overall size of the charger is a better selection for a police vehicle. No police department is going to touch any turbocharged/supercharged vehicles. Maintenance and longevity are at question there.
Dodge is right in leaving it naturally aspirated, it’s what fleet wants, not to mention fuel economy. The police need a vehicle that’s going to fit their needs for function and ease
of use. (they won’t want anything with a floor shifter either). It’s essentially an office that they drive around in most of the day. They don’t necessarily want the fastest, most powerful car on the road, or they’d just get some Vipers or Lambos. Dodge did mess up on the previous tests though with the engine tuning. Now they have that worked out, so the overall numbers are close enough. That traction control can be a real power robber off the line. I don’t want my HEMI supercharged/turbo charged, I like it naturally aspirated, but for the people out there who want that stuff, at least sell the engines supercharger/turbo charger ready. That way they can have the option of adding it later.

HEMIhead, I still wonder about the down under Caprice. How can it be faster and get better gas mileage? Big question, will the motor last? As for turbos, I think you are right in that nobody wants to fool with them unless they are more reliable and durable because of the synthetic motor oils. Need to dial in the HEMI better and I think it could outrun the Caprice. They probably used a Diablo tuner with the Chevy, maybe Dodge needs to do that as well.

Sublime, that’s along the same thoughts I had about it. I am sure it wouldn’t take much for Dodge to step it up. And I agree, I think they should. As for the caprice being faster and better fuel milage, what about vehicle weight? I didn’t see it listed there. If it’s lighter than the charger, which I would think it would be, this may be the advantage. I see they were playing with the rear end ratios a bit on the charger, so with maybe an appropriate rear gear ratio and a better tune on the engine management may address those issues.

I own a 2011 Dodge Charger AWD with the hemi, and the 8.4N UConnect Touch Nav Center in it. I have several problems with it that I can’t seem to get fixed. First, Sirius Radio changed it’s programming channels, and now, when I say “Roadhouse” and the Voice Recognition button is activated, the Srius radio goes to the old Roadhouse channel which, by the way, is no longer the correct channel. Second, the Homelink button (Garage Door opener programmable buttons in the overhead) programming does not work according to the user’s manual (There is no indication on the EVIC of channel clearing or programming). Does anyone have a fix for these problems? I haven’t had any luck getting acceptable answers…. Anyone else having the same problems?
